Now that our performances are finished for the year we will begin our most exciting learning time of the year! Students will be learning about the lives of famous composers and the styles of music written during the different music periods. We will also spend plenty of times playing our exciting music games that reinforce music note names, music symbols and music interval listening games. The competition between the girls and the boys of our school is so fun! This year, the boys are leading!
I remember when I began teaching at Calvin Christian and only 3 students in the school would win the note names and music symbols games because they had taken piano lessons. This year boys have won 102 times and girls 83!
I know that the music education our students receive here at Calvin help them beyond elementary school! This year we have 4 students that have auditioned for college music scholarships and 2 have already heard that they received them! One of our alumni graduated from college and received her teaching credential in music education. This alumna shared with me that she was inspired from observing the kids learning in our elementary music classroom!
The music education our students receive here at Calvin is critical to their development. Here are some interesting statistics on music education: Children who study music tend to have larger vocabularies and more advanced reading skills than their peers who do not participate in music lessons. Elementary age children who are involved in music lessons show greater brain development and memory improvement within a year than children who receive no musical training.
The elementary music program – Just another reason Calvin Christian is the right choice for educating young minds!
